Purchase Funky DL - Nights in Nippon Jazzstrumentals

Many years ago, Funky DL’s older brother told DL about a vision he had whilst riding on the subway train. The vision was the Japanese flag with its clear white background and bold red circle, constantly glowing with DL captivating an audience of music lovers in the Far East with his jazz hip-hop sound. DL always remembered this vision his brother had told him of and knew that one day he would fullfill this image representation with a project, and here in 2012, that time has now come.

"Nights in Nippon" is an instrumental album and dedication to the fond memories Funky DL has accumulated over the many years of his travels in Japan. Having visited the many beautiful cities and towns across the prefectures of Japan, DL has enjoyed everything from the Temples of Kyoto to the flashing lights of Tokyo. From the chilled vibe of Osaka to the calming shores of Yokohama.
Funky DL has been fortunate enough to have been so kindly embraced by the people of Japan and states that he has always been very grateful that "of all the places in the world, the Japanese have supported me the most to make my career worthwhile – my love for Japan is more than I can explain".

This is the very first time Funky DL has ever produced and released an instrumental album based on music that he has never recorded any vocals for. The 10 tracks encapsulate the vibe and energy of the many places in Japan and this album is a perfect representation of the serenity absorbed through the nights of chilling, dining, entertaining and relaxing in one of the greatest countries in the world… "Nippon" (Japan)

Blackcurrent Jazz 2 - Track by Track Synopsis

Written by Funky DL on .

Blackcurrent Jazz 2 - Funky DLThe initial thought that came to mind in the process of making “Blackcurrent Jazz 2” was to create a landscape of ideas that capture the truest essence of Jazz but that also embodied the purest and most authentic hip-hop feel. The original Blackcurrent Jazz album (released in 2001) was a great piece of work but for me was more a mesh of beats and breaks and sometimes with tracks that didn’t even lend to Jazz at all. This time around I wanted every single song to scream JAZZ!!! But still using a combination of Jazz breaks that give off varying vibes.

I wanted this album to be more polished, more distinguished and more discernable than 10 years ago. Smoother, more intricate and ultimately more of a thought through process to it. So I set about the production process which I knew would be huge, because I wanted to use additional beats for 20 second interludes to be used in between each main track, which then ultimately doubled my production load. I also knew that the main selections all had to musically jump out at me and I wasn’t going to start writing until I had found all the right beats that made me feel as if I have the right ingredients for a classic album.

Why did Amy Winehouse get sampled by Funky DL… again?...

Written by Steve Mann on .

Funky DL samples Amy Winehouse Vol 2: //Back To Rap//Introducing “Funky DL samples Amy Winehouse” Vol 2: //Back To Rap //Click here to download FREE NOW!!

The answer this time is… … Because it would almost seem pointless not to take up the challenge of trying to equal or better “Back To Frank”

Funky DL returned to the studio for the second time in April of 2010 to record what was to become “Black To Rap”, the sequel to the “Back To Frank” album which originally sampled Amy Winehouse’s debut “Frank” album but this time around Amy’s sophomore album “Back To Black” was to become the audio victim.

Initially DL had stated that he probably would never sample from “Back To Black” merely because it was such a popular album and he liked the obscurity of Amy’s debut album “Frank” to the mainstream world, as even many Amy Winehouse fans thought and felt that she only had ever made one album.

But why did Funky DL sample Amy Winehouse?...

Great question, and the answer is… Because the idea was exciting enough to do so, knowing that it was never done prior!

Respected hip hop maestro, Funky DL innovatively came correct for 2010 with 'Back To Frank', a piece of Amy Winehouse-inspired audio alchemy.

The project came about after a conversation with MCD (Silent Eclipse), in which MCD suggested ideas for DL to expand his appeal to audiences that would appreciate his trademark jazz sound. MCD suggested he use an Amy hook. A cautious DL took his advice and came up with 'Kicked To The Curb', sampling Amy Winehouse's 'You Sent Me Flying' and after this initial foray, DL never looked back.
